Tangier Island sits in the Chesapeake Bay about 6 miles below the Maryland line. It is is 6.5 miles long and 1.5 miles wide. It would seem that this island property was being passed on and inherited as far back as 1670. Tradition has it that it was settled around the middle 1680s by the Crockett family. Descendants are still there.
In 1800 there were approximately 80 people there.
There are now somewhat over 700, I believe.

The island is made up of flatland, marshland and several higher ground ridges. There is an airport, a dock, a school with all grades, a couple of grocery stores and a health center. There is a town hall, but NO JAIL.

Welcome to
Tangier Island, Virginia

Tangier Island lives its life at sea level.
In recent years a retaining wall has been built.
Staples are all flown in, but the seafood is fresh.
