Onley is full of history.
I realize that time moves on, but this was kinda sad.

Welcome to
Onley, Virginia

Some of the homes in Onley are absolutely gorgeous.
I could have stood in the middle of the street
and just looked at them for hours.

People are restoring the old homes. They love them and it shows.
I have only two here, there are many.
.

old Onley home
Here is a home in the process.
These people have worked long and hard.
They've done much, there's much to do

The people were very nice.

From the man who sells produce on the corner,
(who said when I asked, "Just tell 'em I'm Ben")

This is Ben planting flowers
To the man planting flowers,
(who said when I asked if I could take his picture,
"Well, if you really need to".

And guess what! Here's another town that trusts people;
fresh veggies on the honor system.
And the tomatoes looked really good.

On the other hand, these folks were right next door.
Gotta wonder if there's some other factor at work here. Hummmm!

  Oley fire department

The fire department folks were nice and they were helpful. In fact, they suggested several places that would make good pictures. One was the 911 center for the Shore, located in Accomac. I'm ashamed I didn't think of it. I have the picture and will add asap.

And I just thought it was an ugly brick building! My apologies to it. It's a church now, but it started life in 1900 as the first farmer's marketing coop in Virginia and the second in the nation!

I've included a picture of the back of the same building. Now that is beautiful. In fact, I took it first and that's all I was going to put here 'til I heard the history.

And here's some more history.

Axxomack Woman's Club building old bank building
The Accomack County Woman's Club was established in 1925.
The older building, know now as the 'Overstreet' building bears writing
indicating that it started life as Farmers, Merchants Bank in 1904.
The nice man at this barber shop invited me in
and another person there offered help
on finding places on the Shore.

who created and maintain this beautiful little memorial garden
And there is a municipal building that serves as the polling place for the area.
It also serves as the office for the town law. As a matter of fact, the officer stopped me in town and asked why I was taking pictures.
And, NO, I didn't get his picture. And, YES, I should have.

And last, but not least !! No trip to Onley
would be complete without a stop at Benji's.
If you catch him in, he will sell any possible part of a car -
or he'll sell you the whole car. Be sure to haggle!
