Longer ago than the archeologists would like to admit to, the first settlers used Chincoteague island for temporary hunting and fishing camps. Starting in the late 1700s, after being appropriated by the colonists, Chincoteague island was used as the ultimate livestock pen.

You will find the turn to Chincoteague on Route 13 about 8 minutes south of the Maryland line. It's called 'T's' corner. You'll find this turn about 2+ hours drive north of our end of the Bay Bridge Tunnel complex. Once you turn, I can't help you with time. In the dead of winter you can make it from there to Chincoteague itself in maybe 15 minutes or less. In the summer - much longer. If you go on the days of Pony Penning, take water and games for the kids! Two hours and you may still be sittin' with your finger in your ear. Take a good book.

Welcome to
Chincoteague & Assateague Islands, Virginia

We are trying something a bit different for this town. None of the photos are mine. All have been contributed by viewers. Some of the contributers have a page to themselves, some are together. You will find their names in the credits at the bottom of the page. One of the nice folks, Craig Banks, even wrote the blog.
Thank you all so much!

Thanks to Faith & Ken Miller for catching a shot of these distant ponies for us (and bringing them close)
Thanks to Gordon Greger for this shot of a Laughing Gull looking for the last meal of the day
Thanks, too, to Faith and Ken for this close up of the Chincoteague Light sign which is hard to see in real life.
